The table shows there were a total of 981 deaths from All Causes among 2,287,898 pre-schoolers aged 1-4 living in Arkansas in the 15 years immediately prior to the New Normal™.
981 ÷ 2,287,898 = 0.00043 (Old Normal CDR)
We can use the Old Normal rate to predict this year’s deaths:
2022 pop X Old Normal CDR = expected deaths
144,409 X 0.00043 = 62 expected deaths
The difference between actual and expected deaths shows lives saved or lost:
60 – 62 = -2
Dividing the actual deaths by the expected deaths gives us the comparative rates:
60 ÷ 62 = 0.9469
This reveals 2 lives saved and is 94.69% of what we expected (a decrease of 5%) in deaths from All Causes among pre-schoolers aged 1-4 living in Arkansas in 2022, as compared to the Old Normal.

This is the same method used by Public Health to calculate the 5-yr CDR (Cumulative Death Rate):
370 ÷ 1,061,817 = 0.00035 (5-yr CDR)
144,409(2022 pop) X 0.00035 = 50 expected deaths
The difference between actual and expected deaths:
60 – 50 = 10 or 10 lives lost
Divide actual deaths by expected deaths:
60 ÷ 50 = 1.1591 or an increase of 16%
for deaths from All Causes among pre-schoolers aged 1-4 living in Arkansas in 2022, as compared to the previous 5 years.
Finally, the same method can also be used to compare our Old Normal rate to the New Normal™ rate:
New Normal™ population X Old Normal rate = expected deaths
1,206,226 X 0.00043 = 517 expected deaths
The difference between actual and expected deaths:
430 – 517 = -87 or 87 lives saved
Dividing the actual deaths by the expected deaths:
430 ÷ 517 = 0.8124 or a decrease of 19%
in deaths from All Causes among pre-schoolers aged 1-4 living in Arkansas in the New Normal™, as compared to the Old Normal.
