How the numbers work
We collect death and population statistics from official government sources: national and provincial or state statistics agencies. Every record is organised by year, sex, 5-year age group and cause of death, starting in 2000.
The 15 years from 2000 to 2014 are the Old Normal. From 2015, when UN Agenda 2030 and its Sustainable Development Goals took effect, is the New Normal. Old Normal death rates for each age group are applied to each New Normal year's population to get the deaths you'd expect. The difference from what was actually recorded is shown as excess (or fewer) deaths.
